If a marketing manager doesn’t know who he or she is trying to reach, they might as well quit their job now and go find a vacation home in the Bahamas. Okay, not really. Teaching obvious marketing techniques to ignorant marketing managers is what we do here at Ideal Marketing Tips. Anyway, the target of our talk today is just that: your target…audience, that is.

As we’ve previously discussed (and if you didn’t read our previous discussion, go ahead and search for the term “target audience”), a target audience is that special segment of the population that is most likely to buy your business’s products or services. While certain businesses, such as some social media websites, do not have a specific target audience because they cater to the entire population, most businesses do in fact have a target audience. This target audience can be anything from teenage guys to elderly women in nursing homes and everything in-between. In this post, we’ll talk a little bit about a few popular demographics for target audiences and a little bit on how to reach each one.

The first demographic we’ll discuss is what’s commonly known as “young whippersnappers” to the older part of the population. This demographic consists mainly of grandkids, so it’s both male and females from birth to age twenty or so. Unless you’ve been living in a cave, which raises questions as to how you got the position of marketing manager, you should know that the young population favors shiny things with cool buttons, often referred to simply as “technology.” If that’s a new vocabulary word for you, please go read a dictionary. If not, I’m going to give you a little priceless marketing advice. Since young people like technology, technology is probably (hint, hint) the best way to reach them.

To use a random example, if your target audience consists of parents of young children, you’re going to want to advertise in parenting magazines and baby websites. If your company specializes in the sale and support of wheelchairs, it would be a good idea to put up bulletins in a number of nursing homes. If your company builds custom surfboards, an area with a beach would be a great place to open a new store.

To sum it all up, there are a variety of methods you can use to appeal to your target audience. Here’s a foolproof method for you: Ask the advice of a member of your target audience, or create a survey on your website asking for their opinion.
